The Ultimate Flossing Secret

At Skyview Ranch Dental Clinic we offer routine dental services, oral surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and orthodontics to everyone in the Calgary area. We like to make sure that our patients are doing everything they can to take control of their oral health, and that includes letting them in on a few tips and secrets to maintaining a perfect smile. In the past few years studies have come out that have claimed that there is little correlation between flossing and reduction in plaque in people’s mouths. These studies have led some people to jump to the conclusion that flossing doesn’t actually contribute to your oral health. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. Given the overwhelming evidence that flossing does help, it’s much more likely that most people aren’t actually flossing correctly.

But how do you know if you’re doing it right or not? What’s the secret to flossing that will prevent you from needing oral surgery or some other expensive and time-consuming procedure?

What’s the Secret to Proper Flossing?
We at Skyview Ranch Dental Clinic in Calgary want to tell all our patients that flossing is an essential part of your oral hygiene routine and can easily be mastered with a little patience and thought. If there’s a secret to flossing it’s this: go slowly and be sure to gently clean beneath your gum line. To make sure you’re getting all you can out of flossing, just follow these simple tips:

Use lots of floss. Floss isn’t necessarily a place where you need to economize—it’s not very expensive. Be sure to use at least 46 centimetres and get a solid grip on it when flossing.

Flossing isn’t a race. Be sure to go slowly when flossing. Your toothbrush can’t reach every nook and cranny in your mouth so flossing is meant to clean the hard to reach places. It might take some time.

Treat your gums how you’d want to be treated. Some people, either because they’re rushing or feel a little stressed, are very harsh with their gums when flossing. Don’t snap the floss between your teeth and dig into your gums. Gently rub back and forth to get all the hidden plaque and food debris.

Follow the edges of your teeth. Let you teeth be your guide. When flossing run the edge along the side of your teeth and be sure to gently rub below your gum line. Your floss can and should go that far and, as long as you’re gentle, it will be a great benefit to your oral health.

It makes no difference what order you brush or floss, as long as you do both regularly. If you need further help making your oral health routine the best it can be, contact us at Skyview Ranch Dental Clinic.
